Tour Plan

Hotel Pickup

Your immersive journey begins promptly at 8:30 AM with a comfortable hotel pickup from any centrally located hotel in George Town. Your friendly English-speaking local guide will meet you in the lobby and provide an overview of the day ahead. This private tour ensures you can relax and focus fully on the cultural adventure without worrying about logistics or meeting points.

Chew Jetty

Step into the charming world of Chew Jetty, one of Penang’s oldest and most vibrant Chinese waterfront settlements. This unique village, built on stilts over the water, is home to generations of families preserving traditional ways of life. Explore the narrow wooden walkways lined with colorful houses and learn about the social and cultural history of the clans who live here. Chew Jetty offers an authentic glimpse into Penang’s maritime heritage rarely seen on conventional tours.

Armenian Street

Next, stroll along Armenian Street, a bustling artery within George Town’s UNESCO heritage core. Known as the heart of Penang’s famed street art scene, the street bursts with creativity—mural masterpieces decorate the walls alongside quaint shophouses and cozy cafes. Your guide will share stories behind the artworks and introduce you to hidden gems like local galleries and craft shops, making this a highlight of any Penang heritage walking tour.

Kapitan Keling Mosque

Visit the magnificent Kapitan Keling Mosque, built in the early 19th century by Indian Muslim traders. This architectural marvel showcases stunning Indo-Moorish design with grand domes, intricate stained-glass windows, and Arabic calligraphy adorning the walls. Step inside the serene prayer hall with its polished marble floors and rows of vibrant prayer rugs. The mosque stands as a testament to George Town’s religious diversity and cultural harmony.

Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Continue your cultural exploration at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Penang’s oldest Hindu temple, renowned for its ornate and colorful gopuram (tower). Marvel at the elaborate sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses that adorn the entrance, telling stories from ancient mythology. This vibrant temple is a living place of worship and community, offering insight into the spiritual traditions of Penang’s Indian population.

Little India

Immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of Little India, a sensory feast of vibrant colors, fragrant spices, and lively sounds. Wander through streets lined with sari shops, gold and silver jewelry vendors, flower garland sellers, and street food stalls offering authentic Indian snacks. Your guide will share fascinating insights into the customs, festivals, and daily life of Penang’s Indian community, making this stop a rich cultural experience.

Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Teng)

Visit the peaceful Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Teng), the oldest Chinese temple in George Town. Admire the craftsmanship of the dragon-entwined greenstone pillars supporting the temple’s high roof and inhale the fragrant incense that fills the air. This temple is dedicated to Kuan Yin, the goddess of mercy, and serves as a spiritual sanctuary for the local Chinese community. Your guide will explain the symbolism behind the temple’s intricate carvings and rituals.

St. George’s Anglican Church

Next, admire the neoclassical beauty of St. George’s Anglican Church, built in 1818. As the oldest purpose-built Anglican church in Southeast Asia, it represents the British colonial heritage that shaped much of George Town’s architecture and culture. Step inside to view its elegant interiors and learn about its role in Penang’s colonial history. The church’s pristine white facade and serene surroundings provide a striking contrast to the bustling city streets.

Khoo Kongsi

Conclude your walking tour with a visit to Khoo Kongsi, the grandest Chinese clan house in Penang. Known for its exquisite ornamentation and detailed carvings, this architectural masterpiece reflects the wealth and influence of the Khoo clan. Explore its intricately decorated halls, dragon motifs, and gilded roofs while your guide shares stories of clan traditions and community life. This final stop encapsulates the deep roots of Chinese culture in Penang’s heritage.

Back Hotel

After soaking in the rich heritage and cultural tapestry of George Town, your guide will provide a comfortable return transfer back to your original hotel or accommodation. Just very okay

Guide was super friendly and professional, but the tour didn't stop every at every advertised location was visited and would have preferred to skip the shopping destination. Went on another tour the same day and got more description for the same stops. Bit too pricey for what it is..

A wonderful historic UNESCO World Heritage Site

We enlisted a local tour operator to show us this wonderful, historical UNESCO World Heritage Site. In no particular order we saw Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, Fort Cornwallis, Chew Jetty, Armenian Street, Kapitan Keeling Mosque, Little India, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Goddess of Mercy Temple, St. George Anglican Church and Khoo Kongsi. The local street art was also visited including: "little children on a bicycle" and "flying Butterfly Cat". Great guide who also gave us tips on the street food and the brest places to shop..

Great way to experience and learn about Penang!

The tour with Khoo Bee Lean was great! We learnt a lot about the origins of Penang, including the British settlement, and we also learnt a lot about the Chinese clan family system. It was also great to hear the perspective of a local on Penang’s past and current direction. It was a great way to see and contextualise Penang and we would definitely recommend to anyone visiting!.

Curate’s egg

OK early on, but (I) we had to press the guide to visit all the listed venues (he appeared keen to get home!), and (ii) we were taken to 2 (unwanted) commercial outlet stores..
